horse-rug-smOlder animals quite often get affected by arthritis. Like in humans, it is a painful illness and, unfortunately, no cure exists yet. However, there are many natural remedies or treatments that can significantly help our friends and can work alongside traditional veterinary medicine. It is wise to consult your vet for a definite diagnostic and make sure that the natural remedies you use do not interfere with whatever your vet has prescribed. The following treatments can be used with horses and dogs. I do not recommend to use aromatherapy (essential oils) on cats as it can be fatal. You can replace essential oils with hydrolats or floral water.

It takes good knowledge of animals and aromatherapy to know when and how to use essential oils with pets.

Remember that essential oils are unsafe for cats (can be lethal). Floral waters are best suited for them.

There are many literature on unsafe essential oils but only a little on those unsafe for animals. One rule applies to all though is that if it is unsafe for humans, it is unsafe for animals as well.

It is important to know which essential oils you can use on your dog or horse and to remember that what might suit one, might not be suited for another one.

To start with, it is essential to state that before buying essential oils for your pets, it is of utmost importance that you only purchase the highest quality oils, 100% pure. Food grade and cosmetic grade essential oils are not considered the highest quality, even if stated they are 100% pure.

Animals are highly sensitive and you must only use the best.

Animals respond well to aromatherapy as it is a natural remedy. Aromatherapy is not a cure for all but certainly helps with certain ailments.
The information bellow explains where essential oils have been found successful. Although based on human uses, it is easy to extrapolate these to our dogs and horses.
