Macerated Oil

Articles - Recipes

This is an easy recipe to make your own macerated oil which you can then use on your pet within a massage blend or ointment.

bottle-oilYou will need:

  • Fresh or dried herbs/roots/flowers etc
  • Enough good vegetable oil to cover the above. No need to use cold-pressed oil as it will be heated up
  • A heat-proof dish/bowl
  • A pan
  • Water
  • Strainer
  • Dark glass bottle/jar

Place the pan and the water on the stove and bring the water to a boil.

Place the chopped plants in the heat-proff bowl/dish and cover with oil.

Place the dish in the pan and heat for about 1 hour, ensuring the oil does not overflow.

Remove from the heat after 1 hour, strain and collect the oil. Repeat the operation using a new batch of plants with the same oil if needed. By doing so, you will make a stronger oil.

Once you are satisfied with the strength, then pour the strained oil in a dark glass bottle or jar and label it with the name and date.

You can use calendula, clove buds (it is safer to use the macerated oil instead of the essential oil with your pets), comfrey, garlic, arnica, onion, St John's Wort (essential oil of the later is not recommended with pets, especially horses)
