April 24 every year is World Laboratory Animal Day, and the week surrounding this date is known as WWAIL – World Week for Animals in Laboratories. Most people are completely unaware of the exorbitant numbers of animals that are tortured each year for the testing of drugs, weapons, surgical procedures, cosmetics and household products. Even a small country like Australia uses approximately 7 million animals each year for various scientific research and teaching projects.

Animal Testing – Find out cruelty-free companies and products

I am a fervent advocate of animal rights and one common procedure in today’s world that makes my hair raise on my back is animal testing. With today’s technology, the need to test products on animals is not necessary, however, a vast majority of companies still do it. Big brand names like L’Oreal, Dove, Rexona, Cacharel, Colgate, Palmolive, Ponds, Olay, Windex, Armor All, Clairol, Gillette, Iams, Eukanuba and the list goes on, still perform testing on animals.

It is extremely hard to find products that are not tested on animals. Cosmetics like make-up and skin-care, hair products and perfumes are amongst the most tested products. However, there are some companies that have completely banned animal testing like Revlon. But animal testing of products is not reserved to personal-care products. Some companies test on cleaning products and even on fruit juices!! And I am not going to talk about medical testing on animals as the list is endless! read more
